ACK EMMANUEL KENGELENI CHURCH

Emmanuel Church Kengeleni, was established by the CMS in 1889 to provide a place of worship for freed slaves in Mombasa. It was under Frere town settlement and is named after Sir Bartle Frere, who played a significant role in abolishing slavery and slave trade in East Africa in 1873.

Most of these people or Freretownians have no tribe; originated from Nyasaland, present day Malawi and Southern Rhodesia are the descendants of freed slaves. .Emmanuel Church Kenegeleni, so called Kenegeleni because of a huge bell erected nearby along the Mombasa/ Malindi highway symbolising bells that were once rung to sound an alarm warning the coastal dwellers whenever Arab slave dhows appeared the Indian Ocean. Emmanuel Church Kenegeleni is a national monument of the National museums of Kenya.

Emmanuel Freetown Church and Frere town community was allocated 600 acres of land between Kengeleni, Mishomoroni,Mkomani Nyali and Junda areas .However, in 1830, there was a disagreement between the missionaries and the freed slaves, which resulted in the sale of the land to a company called Nyali. However after disagreements between Missionaries and freed slaves in around 1830, descendants of freed slaves were resettled on a 50 acre piece of land now known as Frere town in Kisimani area. The British Government made a commitment of 40 British sterling pounds every month for the maintenance of Emmanuel Frere town church but the grant has ever since diminished with the passing of time.
